Mikołaj Poliński “Sounds of the Pentagonal Garden”

„Sounds of the Pentagonal Garden”

In 2015, I painted a piece in Japan whose composition is built up by a pentagon. I titled it „Imagining the Pentagonal Garden”, referring metaphorically to the Utopia Pavilion[1] built near Poznań. The surface of the canvas has been covered with two glass sheets, which reflect the surroundings of the painting.

The exhibition at the Jan Tarasin Art Gallery in Kalisz is an attempt to materialise an imaginary pentagonal garden – an imaginary „atelier” and its environment.

The situation in the exhibition space is created by objects, fragments of space, paintings, drawings, projected photographs and sound recordings collected from three remote „real” studios in Aso, Japan, Poznań, Poland, and the Utopia Pavilion near Poznań.

The exploration was also inspired by the question to what extent does the environment in which a painting is created determine its form? In other words, does the cultural context of the place, its spatial characteristics (proportions), the angle of incidence of light, the surrounding sounds influence the identity of the work being created?

How will the process of creating a painting be affected by moving the piece into a completely different context?

How will objects (works) belonging to completely different cultural spaces work when put together?
